Birthday: July 29
Favorite Local Triathlon: I haven't been here for a triathlon season yet, so I'm looking forward to finding out which local tri IS my favorite!
Bucket List Race: Kona, because every triathlete dreams of Kona... even a triathlete like me who doesn't really want to do a full Ironman!
Must-Have Gear:
- A good helmet - preferable a Rudy Project - because nothing ruins your day like brain damage
- Carbon-soled shoes - because I get much better power than when I wear plastic-soled shoes
- My Scott Plasma Tri Bike - because a smooth and reliable ride is essential
How I Got Into This: I'm relatively new to triathlon, having become a triathlete only 3 seasons ago. I started biking after I was diagnosed with a fracture in my heel and told that I wouldn't be running for at least three months. My first race was a sprint triathlon in Virginia Beach, VA (Sandman Tri) followed only 3 weeks later by Beach to Battleship 70.3 in Wilmington, NC. I finished in the top 3 for both events and despite massive chafing, sunburn, and soreness, I was hooked. I'm much fitter than I was as a runner because I can get a larger volume of exercise in without th constant pounding on my body and triathlon more effectively strengthens my whole body.
Favorite Part of a Tri: The bike is my favorite leg of the race, mostly because I get to pass a lot of boys!
Goals: I really want to make the top 25 women in my age group at USAT Age Group Nationals, but overall, I want to see myself develop as a triathlete by executing my races intelligently. This season I will be focusing on strength on the bike and the swim and I hope that, in years to come, this will carry me to the front of my age group at future National Championships.
Nutrition Advice: My husband and I try to eat a balanced, plant-based diet and as we get closer to race-day we fill focus on getting in a few more carbs and less fiber. My pre-race and pre-training go-to meal is oatmeal w/ almonds or walnuts. During workouts and races I rely on Nuun tablets for my electrolytes and Honey Stinger chews and gels for an energy boost when needed.
FYI: I used to take trapeze lessons and even performed once. I love Star Trek. I am actually terrified of being eaten by a shark during an open water swim.
Day Job: Navy Clinical Psychologist
Why GCCT Rocks: This tri shop is the most welcoming that I have ever encountered, which is saying ga lot since we've lived in 3 different states in the last 3 years. From the moment I walked in, I felt like I was being welcomed into the community/family. When my husband wrecked his bike recently, shop frequenters and the shop owner went out of their way to make sure my husband and his bike were taken care of.
